(Acoustic Emission)

    Hello,doctor Muravin.
We are group of students from Ukraine, and in our research we are interested in sound of wood burning. We suppose that the sound of wood cracking(while burning) is caused by acoustic emission of the wood layers. We aren't sure whether we are mistaking. It will be good enough if you could advise us some theoretical literature on this topic. Please contact us by email: queenmaid@gmail.com
    Thanking you in anticipation.

  2. Dorogaya Irena,

Cracking, snapping, popping sound that we hear during wood burning is Acoustic Emission. As wood dries it shrinks. As a result, it usually develops radial cracks. Under exposure of fire these propagate due to thermal gradients and internal stresses. Green wood often have more than 50% water by weight and it will produce AE differently. AE characteristics during the process of wood firing also depend on the moisture and oil content of the wood. If more details about the goals of your study will be available I would able possibly to recommend more specifically a setup of experiment and literature.

    S uvazeniem,
